In Residence with Tibetan Lama, Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche

Datu welcomes you to an intimate four day residence with Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche. A revered Tibetan Buddhist master and lineage holder, Rinpoche’s teachings bring together profound inner practices with a warmth, clarity and presence that make them deeply accessible. This is an unusually personal opportunity to encounter him and his teachings directly in a small community, through two carefully held practices: Tummo Fire Breathing and Dzogchen Meditation.

About this Retreat

This residency is an opportunity to spend time with Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche in a small group and to encounter a living tradition through his guidance. Rinpoche’s teachings in Tummo Fire Breathing and Dzogchen Meditation offer different doorways into the relationship between body, breath and mind, inviting a kind of attention that is direct, embodied and deeply personal.

The days will be held simply, leaving space for the teachings to settle. Alongside Rinpoche’s sessions, guests will have time to attend complimentary group classes, enjoy the gardens, book a Datu treatment or simply be by the sea. Datu’s Sowa Rigpa treatments offer a natural complement to the residency, drawing on the Tibetan medical tradition and its understanding of the relationship between body, energy and mind. Our signature Datu kitchen will accompany the residence throughout, with food prepared with the same attention to season, place and nourishment that has always been part of our table.

This is, above all, a residence devoted to learning: time in an extraordinary place, in the company of an extraordinary teacher, with the rare opportunity to listen, practice and encounter these teachings at close hand.

What to Expect

A More Direct Experience: Practice, Presence and Attention

At the centre of the residence are two practices from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, each offering a different way of approaching the nature of body and mind.

Tummo Fire Breathing is an embodied practice of breath, movement and visualisation, traditionally understood as a method for cultivating inner heat and working with the body’s subtle energies. Under Rinpoche’s guidance, guests will be introduced to the principles behind the practice before entering into the breath and movement themselves. It is at once physical and contemplative: a practice of gathering attention, awakening vitality and discovering a deeper relationship with the breath.

Dzogchen Meditation approaches the mind from an entirely different direction. Rather than asking us to concentrate on an object or construct a particular state, Dzogchen invites us to recognise what is already present. Through Rinpoche’s guidance, guests are introduced to a way of resting with the mind without attempting to alter, suppress or improve it. The practice is remarkably simple in appearance, yet opens onto one of the most profound questions of Buddhist philosophy: what is the nature of mind itself?

These teachings form the thread running through the residence. The wider programme at Datu is shaped around them, with daily movement practices, group sessions as well as the opportunity to book individual therapies offering different ways to explore and integrate what is encountered in Rinpoche’s teachings.
