A Return to the Source

Dimora di Datu presents Return to the Source, a forthcoming residency in Goa, India. Set in close proximity to the origins of the practices that shape our work, the programme draws on the landscapes, climate and cultural rhythms that have sustained this knowledge over time. By locating the retreat at its source, Datu offers guests the opportunity to develop an embodied understanding of Ayurveda as a living system while engaging more deeply with its principles and practices.

About this Retreat

Goa sits at a point of repeated contact. Empires, maritime routes and successive cultural intervals have passed through the same geography without fully replacing what came before. What remains is a condition of overlap, where cultural systems continue in proximity.

Datu’s presence in Goa carries the joy of return. This act of ‘coming back to’ is continuous; a fundamental principle that lies at the core of Eastern traditions. Many of the ideas and practices that underpin our philosophy have their roots in this region and neighbouring traditions. To bring guests here is therefore an extension of that return, an invitation to step into the context from which the work originally draws. There is a particular hospitality in this gesture, grounded in familiarity, inclusion and responsibility. Guests are welcomed into a safe structure with the understanding that everything has been considered and that one may simply land.

The retreat unfolds at the Postcard Hideaway, where the coastline gives way to nature reserve and the elevated terrain of the Western Ghats. The monsoon arrives differently here, the surrounding hills tempering its intensity. The architecture blends unobtrusively with its environment; large windows and private terraces frame expansive views, while the interiors are designed for elegance and comfort from which to experience the serene landscape. Treatments, meals, surroundings and time begin to work in concert. A Return to Source emerges gradually from this continuity, as the body settles back into internal balance and responsiveness.

What to Expect

Authenticity, integrity and individualised care

There are forms of restoration that deepen through proximity to place. Certain therapeutic traditions retain an atmospheric dimension that cannot be fully abstracted from their surroundings, no matter how faithfully their methods are reproduced elsewhere. Practitioners may travel internationally, techniques may circulate globally, yet something remains tied to the ecology from which the work first emerged. One encounters the difference instinctively. It is the difference between a tradition being practiced and a tradition still embedded within daily life. In India, these systems continue to exist as living structures of knowledge woven into the broader cultural fabric.

The monsoon, “Varsha Ritu” defines the context, the rains alter both atmosphere and physiology. Heat softens into humidity, movement slows and attention turns inward. Traditional medical frameworks regard this season as uniquely conducive to treatment because the body becomes more permeable and responsive; patterns of fatigue, tension and stagnation surface more clearly and can therefore be addressed with greater precision. The sound of rain, the softened light, the suspension of outward urgency together produce conditions that support withdrawal from habitual rhythms and entry into a more restorative state.

The therapeutic work is organised around this understanding. Datu’s distinctiveness lies in the breadth of traditions held together within a single coherent framework. Ayurveda, Sowa Rigpa, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chi Nei Tsang, Yoga and Western musculoskeletal practice are held in relation, each attending to a distinct register of the body: circulation, structure, visceral tension, breath, energetic flow and postural alignment. Considered together, they allow the organism to be understood more completely and treated with greater precision. Their arrangement is determined through assemblage, ensuring that intervention remains exact, responsive and effective.

For Indian guests, the retreat offers a return to familiar lineages of knowledge encountered again with renewed clarity and contemporary articulation. Traditional systems are approached with respect, allowing recognition to arise alongside renewed understanding. For international guests, the same framework is presented with careful guidance and support, allowing unfamiliar territory to become accessible without dilution. In both cases, the emphasis remains on direct experience.

Food follows Datu’s approach to nourishment, where cooking is akin to treatment. Seasonal ingredients, careful combinations and attention to digestion and metabolic process shape the kitchen’s rhythm. The aim is synergy, where meals support the healing process being established through the therapeutic work. Each preparation carries the chef’s love for the act of feeding others. The resulting dishes are composed, restrained and refined.

A Withdrawal into the Art of Introspection

Dimora di Datu presents a new programme dedicated to introspection and meditative attention situated within a landscape long associated with contemplative life. Set within more than three thousand hectares of protected natural reserve, Eremito Hotelito del Alma occupies a terrain shaped by centuries of spiritual inquiry.

About this Retreat

We arrive to the region of Umbria, where monastic architecture and devotional practices developed as sustained investigations into restraint, presence and the ethical shaping of everyday life.

Conceived as a place of withdrawal, Eremito draws on medieval hermitage models while translating them into a comprehensible, contemporary language. Stone construction, cellular living units and a clear relationship between interior space and surrounding terrain establish a setting shaped by simplicity, regularity and ecological continuity. Life within the residence unfolds according to simple sequences of treatments, movement, resting, eating and observation, allowing attention to settle into a steady, inward-facing mode.

Datu’s programmes are structured around an essential principle: collaboration with teachers whose work emerges from the spiritual lineages of India and the East, where knowledge is sustained through practice, time and lived transmission. These teachings unfold through measured guidance that respects the integrity of lineage while remaining attentive to contemporary conditions. Meditation is approached here as a cultivated state, developing through discernment and care while being supported by an ethic of responsibility toward both individual experience and the broader environment in which it unfolds.

In residence at Eremito, Datu extends its investigation into how environments shape interior life, with a focus on psychological and emotional integration supported by soothing treatments. The monastic typology at Eremito, historically associated with discipline and continuity, offers a framework in which effort, repetition and containment become constructive in the establishment of contemplative practice. The surrounding forest, the absence of artificial illumination at night and the continuity of natural sound contribute to an experience of luxury understood in its older sense: the rare condition of uninterrupted time.

What to Expect

Held in Continuity and Stillness

The retreat takes its orientation from the meditative framework outlined in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, with particular attention to pratyahara and dhyana as successive movements of practice. Pratyahara is approached as the gradual settling of sensory demand and dhyāna as the development of sustained attentional continuity.

Meditation practice is introduced with clarity and restraint. Instruction remains consistent throughout the retreat, allowing familiarity to replace novelty. Seated practice is supported by walking and periods of quiet presence, reinforcing continuity of attention across changing forms. Over the course of the retreat, distinctions between practice and non-practice may begin to soften, as attentiveness becomes less dependent on instruction and more grounded in continuity of lived presence.

Other limbs of yoga are used sparingly and in service of this trajectory. Gentle asana and pranayama function as preparatory modalities, assisting in the organisation of bodily posture and respiratory rhythm so that attention may settle without disturbance. Daily body treatments extend this work into the somatic field. These treatments are conceived as a means of supporting integration, allowing accumulated tension to release and perceptual clarity to be embodied.

Meals are simple, seasonal and carefully prepared, reflecting Datu’s consistent approach to nourishment as an integral part of wellbeing and the cultivation of spiritual practice.

Throughout the stay, participants are held within a supportive and discreet framework. Teachers and the Datu team provide guidance, structure and care while preserving the integrity of silence and individual process. In the context of contemporary life, often characterised by fragmentation of attention and instrumental use of the body, the retreat offers an opportunity to recalibrate attention, perception and bodily rhythm through containment, continuity and time.
